Goodbye to Facebook. And the process made me wonder… what is Facebook, and should we have more strict control with a piece of big brother social software like that ??

These are facts: Deleted images will remain on facebooks server and be accessible for a long period of time. your information is not gone just because you delete It. You have to answer a survey before you can deactivate your account. Login will cancel your deactivation or deletion.

So what is Facebook doing with all our information ?? Since the information is not deleted I guess they must have some use for It.
Also… making the process of leaving Facebook so difficult is simply not okay. The survey is really crazy. Would be like If you dont want to eat your BigMac and MacDonalds wont let you leave until you have told them why you didnt like your burger. Insane if you ask me.

Another thing is the uncritical way that most of us are using Facebook. Especially when talking photos. It is a fact that you need a persons permission before you can post a photo of that person on the internet. It is a grey zone, and since I work with photography Im well aware of this problem. But on Facebook alot of things have changed. 10 years ago It would have been unthinkable to pass a private photo from a party to ALL your friends. Add to that, that many people have connections on Facebook who are not really their friends. Passing on a private photo without permission from the person on the photo is actually not legal unless the photo was taken in public. Lets say some guy is out cold on the street with piss on his pants, would It then be okay to post a photo of him on your wall without his approval ?? Actually yes.. but then again.  Also… consider the fact that many might want a photo removed but because of social pressure or other reasons this person will say nothing because Its expected to go along. Its not like a real photo you can tear up. Its digital, and It gets copied, stored and distributed. Laws will not really cover that aspect, but maybe It should be part of basic education to learn about social software and Its pitfalls.

Deleting friends. Now thats a real tricky one. Deleting a person from FB can result in some pretty strong reactions. That changes our freedom when It comes to selection of what information we want to share and with whom. I find FB very limited when It comes customizing the way information flows. And im pretty sure these limitations are in place on purpose. FB is NOT a public service. It is a business. Their goal is not to make your life any better, but to make money. They want you to connect and keep connecting.  As for the photos, they want It to be “fun” and “easy”. They care about money, and what they do NOT care about is what impact Facebook has on society and what price we pay to use such an application. Surely they can say that they do nothing more than providing a great and free service, but when you come to think about how massive the cultural impact of Facebook is, then maybe we should start asking some serious questions.

im not saying that Facebook should be controlled by politicians, or am I ?? I know that Im on thin ice here, but my point is that social software is simply more than freedom of speech (If that one is still intact). Social software is not different than the destruction of our planet. The kind of situation where we think everything is just going great, and then suddenly we go “… Ohhh”. Is humanity really that stupid ?? YES… The day will come soon when It is not possible to buy a can of tuna, and people will go “… Oooh”. Educating people when It comes to social software is no different than seriously considering global degrowth. Yes.. we have to save the planet, but maybe saving ourselves is a pretty good idea as well.

Not that Facebook is all bad. I think It is great in many ways. Just like the Manhatten project was a brilliant idea, unless you ask the Japanese.

An old friend that I really love. Far away mostly, and It makes me wonder what the global village means when It comes to having coffee across borders. Sure thing we are more connected and leaving the country does not mean leaving your friends behind. But since this is how we roll now, It is also getting harder to keep up. Facebook and whatever is a river of information. Sometimes good, and other times just garbage. But nothing beats the good old one on one cup of black. So.. here is a friend I miss, and I should go this year, to get that cup of hot steaming local coffee that makes everything seem less global and superficial.

Is the global village getting bigger or smaller ?? I must admit It seems very big when you want to turn off the router and sit down for a talk.

Everything gone digital. Happy New Year to the cameraindustry´s succesful attempt to brainwash people into thinking that digital is better. Its not BETTER ! Its simply DIFFERENT !

Give us back the film and the feeling that taking a photo is something special. A Kodak Moment, or whatever you wanna call It.

Deleted my account on Tumblr. I simply think people should take their own photos or at least give credit to the photographer. And yes.. there is a difference between watching an illegal movie and stealing a photo from a photographer.  And then again no… you just steal from MORE people when you download a movie.

Years ago I had a discussion with Jesper Bernt about stealing movies, and I hate to admit It, but he is right. So Jesper is not allowed to comment on this post !!!!

In the work zone these days, and I really needed som music to make It all flow.
Long ago I listened so much to Keith Jarret that I could actully predict many of his notes. Spend a whole year listening to nothing else but Keith Jarret. Maybe a little strange, but a wonderful experience to get to know his music like that. Sorry to all my friends for buying them Jarret for their birthdays and such.
So… He is back, and It feels like seing a long lost friend.
